Cascade Head, October 9, 2022
Along the Oregon coast, just south of Neskowin, just north of Lincoln City, Cascade Head is a property of The Nature Conservancy. I volunteered two days as a naturalist here. This Preserve is home to the rare Oregon Silverspot Butterfly, as well as a couple of plants that grow nowhere else: hairy checkermallow and the Cascade Head catchfly. This native grassland is being preserved and being brought back to its original grassland state. Cascade Head rises 1217 feet above sea level, the last half mile of the trail to the summit being quite steep with a number of switchbacks. The view to the south is pretty stunning, going over Camp Westwind and south to Lincoln City and God’s Thumb.
